Tiny Lights Flying Through Space? Aliens? or Satellites?

Oftentimes, I like to lie outside beneath the nighttime sky and watch things move about in space. I don't have a fancy telescope or even binoculars. Last night, I did this—and to my surprise, I noticed tiny little specks of white and green lights buzzing about in all directions. At first, I said to myself, "What in the world are those things?"

As described on Google: Starlink is a constellation of thousands of satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at about 550 km, and cover the entire globe. Because Starlink satellites are in a low orbit, latency is significantly lower—around 25 ms vs. 600+ ms.

So the next time you're outside at night and see all those tiny lights buzzing about, just remember—they're only satellites. Not aliens trying to invade Denny’s in Springfield at 10:00 PM. Although, if we were to be invaded by aliens, they might appreciate us… after having tried a Grand Slam.
